What's the difference between shampoo and body wash/soap?

besides the fact that one is for hair and ones for your body. but it seems to me that they have the same purpose, to clean and hydrate/moisturize, so why do we have two different products for the same thing? What's the difference between shampoo and body wash/soap?
Shampoo is alot milder.. It's the only REAL difference unless you get those special shampoos to do thinks like make your hair shiny or curly :)What's the difference between shampoo and body wash/soap?
Shampoos in general are horrible for your hair and many soaps have dangerous(not fatal lol) chemicals in them. By definition Shampoos are designed specifically to clean your scalp and hair strands, which contains different oils because of your hair. Soaps are obviously for the rest of the body. In most cases soaps and shampoos do not differ and i know many people in curly hair groups that use oragnic soaps to wash their hair. So in reality their is really no define difference between soaps and shampoos, it really just depends on who uses them and what the company wants to call it.

It wasn't actually til recently when people started using shampoos to wash their hair, in the old days people used soap to clean everything on their body. At some point it was believed that shampoos and conditioners was a women thing.(this was the USA, im not sure about other countires)

The chemicals used in many shampoos are the same chemicals they use to take grease off of car engines, so I don't use shampoo to clean my hair, i just use conditioner. The only time i use shampoo is when their is something impossibly amount of dirt or grease that cannot be taken out by conditioner. I do what's called the curly hair regime, it's very clean and a extremely healthy regime for curly hair. Anyways my doctor recommends to use DOVE soap, generally because it's most gentleness soap known around.

Edit:To make a long story short, their is no difference, the only difference is the person who uses it, and what the company wants to call it.
Its the strength of the detergent in the formula.
